Vs 4a - God's Promises

02.2.7

“For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises,”  2 Pet 1:4a

When the author states “For by these . . .” what is he speaking of?  It seems clear that he is referring to “ His own glory and excellence” found at the end of the preceding verse.  The intent of this clause seems to be that God, working through or by means of His glory and excellence provides us with many things.  Note that it is He that “has granted to us” these things.  God is the first cause of all things.  He is also the first cause in our personal spiritual development.  It is in the very character of God that we find the deepest roots of our spiritual maturation.  It is He that has arranged the events of history, the structure of the Church, and the experiences of our lives that bring us to this point.  His character led Him to promise us, followers of Christ, many things, including the hope of heaven.  It is these promises and the character of the One that made them, that leads us to put our faith in Him.  Also, it is these promises that will be very helpful in producing Hope when we are suffering at Endurance.
