Knowledge/Gnosis is the more basic form of understanding, as distinguished from: wisdom/sophia, advanced knowledge/epignosis, and absolute knowledge/episteme. Gnosis is often described as 'practical' knowledge. It is seen as foundational for Christian living. It provides the direction for action and guides it's implementation. It allows for discretion and, ultimately, stimulates prudence.
Knowledge develops out of lived experience. Sometimes encapsulating what does NOT work, and, at other times, formalizing what does work, so that it may be successfully repeated. It guides action so as to avoid trouble and maximize spiritual growth. Advanced levels of knowledge impress upon disciples the will of the Lord in various situations in their lives. By doing so, it motivates us to repent and change as needed to better understand and approach the Lord's will for our lives.
Study of the Scriptures is important here, though preaching, teaching and reading relevant Christian literature are also useful. The key is the communication of information relevant to the seeking disciple who is struggling with current life issues.
